Default Looking for a good s2000 mechanic

I'm at 44k. Bought it used at 39.6k. I'd like to get my retainers checked, valves adjusted, and maybe do leak-down & compression tests. Does anyone know a good s2000 mechanic in my area: Winston Salem, NC? I'm willing to drive, but not too far.

I think I might be able check the retainers, and adjust the valves myself, but I'm not sure I could change the retainers if they need it. Plus I'd like to watch someone else first, so I don't make any mistakes.

You should post this in your local forum. The owners around you will know what shops are in your area. Or do you want to travel to the other side of the continent to get your work done?

Jason,

I live in W/S but have not had my valves adjusted yet. W1ngman from the Mid-Atlantic Forum just had some major top end work done at Crown in G'Boro and was very satisfied. Call me if you want 336-924-9284

BTW, you should try to join us for the NC-VA Border Run next Saturday 9/24. Check out the thread in the Carolina's Forum.

hmm i guessing "W1ngman" drives the yellow s2k that bent the valves. i doubt u will have any retainers problems or anything the only reason W1ngman had problems was due to the fact that someone had not tightend the crank pully and caused the key to come out of the bottom gear on the crank for the timming chain. i think he had around 115k on it and the motor and car looked to be in great shape. Not 100 percent sure what caused his problems but i'm thinking thats what the guy that worked on it told me.

I'm a little worried about the retainers due to a miss-shift (don't try to shift with a cell phone in your hand) I missed 4th and hit 2nd at about 70mph. I quickly pushed in the clutch, but the back tires actually locked up for an instant. The car still runs great, but I still want it checked out....I'll probably end up doing it myself. But if any of them are worn, I won't be able to replace them. Also I bought the car used and I want to know how well the inside of the engine looks, condition of the valves, is it holding compression, etc. Since there may not be anything to "fix", I'm looking for a good s2000 mechanic who will let me be apart of the operation. I want to learn as well as get her checked out. Plus I'm pretty anal when it comes to any work done on my baby. I want a mechanic that is as meticulous as me. I hate having to let someone else work on her at all, but I realize my inexperience. I'm good with my hands and do all the basic maintenence on her myself, but I'd hate it if I screwed something up. Plus I don't want to spend a fortune on a bunch of specialty tools.

Jay,
Thanks for the invite. I'm definetly going to try to make it. 75% chance I'll be there. I've been wanting to hang out with some fellow s2k enthusiasts.

Dolemike recommended Turbo Tune in G-boro...Mark. Do they do the kind of work I'm talking about or are they just tuners? Anybody else have any opinions of them? Will they let me be part of the operation? What about Crown...can I watch what's going on there or do I have to sit in the waiting area?

Turbo Tune several years ago... and i mean... 15-17years ago got into some trouble for purposely setting peoples cars up to break down and therefor giving them more work. But as I said he got burned pretty bad and their reputation went down the crapper. So you wont get dicked around and they make sure they do a good job and do it right. Its not just a tuner shop... they specialize in turbo charged cars (Grand Nationals all around the lot) but he really knows his stuff about cars. Call him up and talk to him and tell him what you are looking to have done. He will tell you if hes the man for the job or not. Ill be taking my car up there in the near future to have him adjust the valves and give my car a compression check for future plans of FI on my car.
