Moving to Raleigh from Nashville
Hello!
I'm starting a new job next week and will be moving most likely to the Raleigh area in June/July. S is coming with me of course. How active is the car scene out there? And any good roads? In Nashville, there's not a lot but The Dragon isn't far
I was hoping you guys could give some advice on areas to look for housing. I'm mostly looking at apartments but would consider townhouses as well. 23, single, no kids. Trying to stay below $800/mo. I'd definitely prefer a garage. Most important thing is feeling secure and being clean. My job is in sales and proximity to the office is really a non-existent thing.
Looking forward to meeting you guys.
- Jack.

Hey Jack,
Welcome to the area.
Your in luck we have a great group here. We get together on the first Saturday of each month with several other car clubs for cars and coffee and then grab some lunch. We will also grab a couple of beers after work sometime in between.
There are some good roads around depending on where you decide to live. There are a lot of things going on downtown and in the five points area but obviously it is more expensive. I would suggest coming to the area and doing some checking around before you make a choice on where to live. Hell, if your renting it is easy enough to move if you aren't happy with your first choice.

Hey Jack,
I'm actually 23/single/newly-employed as well. If you don't mind still being around college kids, there are plenty of places around the NC State campus that are pretty inexpensive (even more so if you're willing to have a roommate or two). There are a couple apartments/townhomes that have garages. The general location is good since it's close to downtown, but also near a lot of shopping centers, restaurants, etc.
If you're looking for something nicer, a lot of young professionals move to the Glenwood or Five Points neighborhoods just north of downtown. North Hills is also another bustling location. However, all of these places are pretty expensive... then again, you get what you pay for.
I'd be happy to answer any questions you have. Oh, and welcome to the Carolina section of S2K owners!

Welcome to Raleigh! I have been here for 7 years after moving from Atlanta, and haven't regretted it yet. Very active car scene, depending on what you like to do. In addition to the Cars&Coffee stuff, the triangle is home base for the Tarheel Sportscar Club, which puts on a full schedule of autocross (my preference), track and rallycross events. There's also local marque clubs (PCA, BMW CCA, Triangle Z Club) that put on events open to all cars, so there's usually something car-related going on every weekend. We meet the second Wednesday of the month usually in the RTP or Durham area, so come join us--lots of S2000 owners already have! Some of the club members also run cars in LeMons and ChumpCar so if that's your addiction you'll feel at home right away! (Although S2ks are still too pricey for that series....

As far as living is concerned, either downtown, NC State or Brier Creek are probably your best bet...Brier Creek may be safer as downtown and NCSU are pretty active nightlife-wise. I'm 41 with wife and two kids, so all I know is third-hand
In general, Raleigh is very low in crime so feel good in that regard.
If you see someone waving you down from within a blue 2009 WRX, that's me in my DD...The S2k is typically weekend duty.
Again, Welcome!

Thanks for the welcomes!
I'm excited for the move, thanks for all the advice. I was happy to see more tracks nearby - Nashville Super Speedway (next closest is Atlanta or Barber in Birmingham both ~4 hrs away.) just closed so it's just autocrossing here - Which is fine, I'm just not very good and short runs don't do much for me.
I do love it here, I'm actually right on the edge of Brentwood. Being closer to the beach will be nice though.
I'd love to jump in as a volunteer in a LeMons or ChumpCar race - they never came here often enough to do anything.
I'm going to head over there a few times before moving so if you see a Sebring AP2 with TN plates... That's me!

I will post up the monthly meet a couple of weeks in advance so if your in the area during that time please stop by and introduce yourself and hangout some. Trust me you will see some very cool rides for a Saturday morning in Raleigh.
