Unfortunately, no. That's the deceiving thing about mountain passes, generally speaking, they are the highest point in the road, but actually go through the lowest point in that particular area of the range. I imagine your new coworkers will be a good source of information, tips, and contingencies.

Can't speak to where you are but I'm in Winston and haven't seen too much of a car scene here. Some Cars and Coffee. Haven't been to one yet, keep forgetting about them until the weekend after they've happened. We don't get much poor weather here in WS, but my daily is a 2011 Subaru Legacy. New ones are not available in a manual anymore, but you could likely find a very nice pre-owned with a manual in your budget, especially up that way.

My wife and I frequent that area when we want to get away. It's beautiful in that area basically year round. Hit up Nantahala Brewing in Bryson City. They have never had a beer that was less than stellar. Enjoy, and welcome to NC! We're in Charlotte. No small towns for me. LOL.

Stopped by Nantahala on my bachelor weekend and I agree. I'd be lying if I didn't say that one of the deciding factors in taking the job was all the beer around here.
