Perplexing Signs on I40
Traveling from Raleigh to Wilmington tonight I became aware of signs I hadn't noticed before. They are the same size as mile markers, verticle format, green, with "VMS(#)" on them. The numbers at the bottom are sequential but don't seem to designate distances. The signs are located in the center of the interstate and appear to face only eastbound traffic.
I've guessed "VMS" stands for "Vehicle Management Station" and it's a place for troopers or lawn mowers to meet. Anyone really know what these are for?

Still, I think I'm going to ask the Chief Engineer here in New Bern about it tomorrow. I've got to get some traffic counts for Morehead City too!
Troopers and mowers. . .

The VMS signs are small, the same size as a mileage marker and are permanent.
Go get 'em Raul!
