radios for group drives
Well, it's Christmas list time, and I'm wondering about the radios that many folks use when we are on group drives. Are these just FRS/GMRS radios like those that families use to keep track of each other when they're out and about? Any particular brand or model that you prefer? What range have you found in practice?
Oh, and assuming that these are FRS/GMRS radios, do we stay on the FRS channels, or do we use the GMRS channels (which apparently require an FCC license)?
Thanks.

I think most of us just use the FRS/GRMS handhelds, that you can get at Walmart or similar retail stores. We usually tend to stay on the CH 4-7 range...so I've never bothered to apply for a license.
Range depends on terrain...on relatively flat ground 5-7mi...on the Dragon...sometimes only a few curves
!!
The one accessory I would recommend, is a comfortable headset of some sort!!! You still have to use the PTT button to transmit, but you can keep the unit in (around) your lap, and can hear much better.
