Default Tax Time! Refund or Paying-in?

Just curious. I just spilled my guts on another thread about our whopping Federal tax return of $90.

And like I typed in that thread, I know folks are saying "well, you could be paying in." I know this, but last year, my wife and I received nearly $1000 in Federal and about $300 in State. Now, we have nearly nothing coming back.

We itemized with our medical, mileage, etc. too, but I was really shocked to see such a small refund. Not that we were banking on that money or anything but I just hate it when I hear that other folks are getting back lots of money.

How did you fare?

Combined Fed + SC = almost $1500 to spend on mods!

This year it was $550 fed and $420 state. Last year it was probably double that.

Having two kids, a house and a wife who doesn't earn just about guarentees some form of refund for me

I am paying this year. 175 fed and 212 state. That's not too bad considering I don't have any dependents but it is still going to hurt to write those checks.

Spilled mine on Air's other thread and it's too sad to put up again. Let's just put it this way, I'll be paying a few of your refunds

Last year I had to pay about $3.5K (Ouch!)
This year I got back about $4.2K (Much better!)

On the other hand, my income this year was only two thirds of what it was last year.

e-filing is great. The refund hit my bank account 12 days after I filed!!
