A few of us went to VIR yesterday and did pace laps. We had a pace car and I had expected little more than a moderate drive. Was I surprised when at one point,in the climbing Esses, I glance at the spedo and was doing 88MPH.
The laps were fairly intense and a welcome surprise.
This is an annual event put on by VIR to support the Salvation Army.
The local TV news in Danville last night had a short clip in which they said 200 cars were entered.
This morning as we were checking out of the motel, I spotted a bunch of Audi owners as they were leaving for VIR for their event.
This one really caught my eye.
Can you spell MONEY?
Loads of fun. It was awesome to finally see put names and faces to the screen names. You guys are great. Hope I can make it out more often.
Here are my pictures.
Group car picture. If you look carefully, you'll spot my car, John's, and Maggie's Elise.
Shot of the track.
Got rides in the Ariel Atom(1). Supercharged K20A engine. And a "Super Lightweight" car(2). That's what they called it. If you know the name post it up!

What I saw at the end of the event. New V8 M3 with a trailer of track supplies.
In the end, I loved the experience. I got to test out the limits of my car and driving abilities on a very controlled environment. I need to get out to the track more often!
I had an awesome time. The last set of laps was intense, glad I waited for that one. Pedro rode with me for that one, it was amazing. He said my top speed was ~117.

Brief recap:
We met at Southpoint and took the scenic route to VIR. Fall colors were beautiful. At the track we were assigned run group F. The cars were lined-up, we had lunch and then we mingled while waiting for our turn. Some of us signed-up for an Ariel Atom ride-along. Then our group was called. I think everyone had a blast. I was surprised the the pace was on the spirited side. At the end of our drive, I noticed something very wide and very yellow with a big wing hitting the track. To our surprise, it was a yellow Superlite Coupe (SL-C). The owner, a VIR Club member, was also giving ride-alongs. About half an hour later I got my chance for a lap in the SL-C and WOW ... that thing can move. Then we all (some of us as passengers) went on track again before the event ended. That final group was awesome ... less than 15 cars on track.
I want to thank Lee for letting us know about this event. I had a GREAT time. We have to do this again. It was nice to see everyone and to meet other for the first time and their first "track day".
