Honestly I got this 'rule' in about grade 2. It sortof works... if you have a long vowel it normally is followed by on consonant (bating) but a short vowel by two (batting).

I know it's bogus and it frankly causes some of my most frequent spelling errors but whatever.

 

Like "Marketing" (Marketting)

 

I guess that is why we were not really taught "rules" at school. Since most of them have so many exceptions, they are not really worth learning
