I'm thinking of buying aTiVO but don't know whether to get a new one or an old "Series 1" so that I can hack it.

Any thoughts?

Yup: If you ever fall off of the Empire State Building, just go limp like a dummy and hopefully someone on the ground will try to catch you and break your fall because, hey, free dummy.

I only have experience with a first generation TiVO. If you can get it cheap, go for it. Otherwise I don't think it's particularly worth it since the technology is already being integrated into more and more devices. I'd consider a series 1 to hack it...

I'm intrigued with the aspect of Hacking. More to have control over the technology than to do anything earthshaking.

It's just a friggin Linux box. I like the idea of running scripts or progs on it. A buddy has made several clever progs... i.e. he loads in phone numbers of people he wants to talk to and using called ID, if someone calls not on the list they get the recording... if they are ON the list the Tivo pauses and the phone rings. Ver Cool.
