600 CDs, eh? Well, yeah, that's a pretty hefty archive!
If you ever do this, make sure you don't toss the original CDs... Someday, that big, honkin' disk drive is going to go in the shitter.

[600-plus CDs] x [500MB of info (average) per CD] + ~20-40 CDs a year growth = I need a 1TB storage appliance

That's actually why I don't *need* to backup the mp3s of the collection right now. . . but it's getting to be a bit of time to re-rip all those discs.

When I *really* want to hear the pure sound I pull out the disk. And they're always there to rip into whatever format I want... as long as I can find a CD drive... who knows how long that will last?

Vinyl, baby.

This
is all the argument any vinyl fan need state.
MP3s annoy me; too tizzy. I have been happy with Apple Lossless though; that's closer resembling a better "compromise."
I presently have most of the CDs ripped on a 250GB drive. I use it for scoring the home movies and moving it onto my 2GB iPod.
You guys are nuts. Anything digital can be made to sound exactly like vinyl. Vinyl will never be able to carry the fidelity of digital.
Oh yeah vinyl sounds *warm* but that's because of low frequency response.

, but that has nothing to do with drive reliability.
