A 1 kilowatt microwave takes around one minute to pop it's first kernel in a closed environment. A cell phone transmitter operates at less than 1 watt or so, but this video shows these kernels popping almost immediately.

Let us do a little math.

Popcorn pops because the water in it turns to steam and a kernel is about 14% water. So, if we assume a kernel of popcorn weighs 1 gram, it has 0.14 grams of water. Heat that water to 100C from 30C would take: (0.14g)*(100C-30C)

To turn the water to steam requires the latent heat of vaporization, which is 2259J/g.

As the kernel is already at 30C, there is approx 41J of the required energy in the kernel already.

2259J*0.14g = 316J
for a total of 316J-41J = 275J.

Wattage = Joules/seconds. If it took 5 seconds to turn the water in the kernel to steam, then wattage required was:

275J/5sec = 71W assuming all power from the cell phone transmitter went into the kernel.

Cell phones typically have 0.75W-1W transmitters in them. With 4, 1W transmitters, it would take,

275J/4W = 69secs, if all power is transfered to the kernel.

You forgot to take into consideration the speed of the wave from the phone. If one thinks of cooking as merely heating the item up, then yes, your math makes sense. However, cooking can also be considered in terms of how excited you make the corn. . . I think. . . it's been a few years since high school.
