My one friend his first year out of college coached two or three sports and taught and made almost 50k. Not bad for 23 y/o only working 9.5 months.
This is what I want to do. I can retire in about 8 years with a government retirement of about $45k per year.
And then I really want to supplement that with teaching. I love teaching and I love sports. My (sad as mediocre as it may seem) goal is to teach high-school calculus or physics and coach football and/or baseball and/or basketball.
I would love being around the kids to keep me young. And at 37 . ... . I wouldn't quite be the Crypt Keeper yet myself.
I would love the opportunity to be that ONE influentual teacher that made a difference. And I would love the chance to coach. And make a difference by coaching not only the technique . .. . but the coaching people to demand more of themselves.
OK, done with that swan song. Sorry!

If you saw some of the tenured dead wood we see that have been teaching for 30 years..basically collecting a FAT paycheck...you might think differently. That being said teaching in the inner cities where kids come to school unfed, ratty clothes and unprepared is no picnic...those teachers do not earn nearly enough!
