Barbara Walters did a TV feature on 'gender roles" in Kabul several years before the Afghan conflict. In that story, she noted that women customarily walked several paces behind their husbands. But, when she returned to Kabul just recently, she observed that men now walk several paces behind their wives. She approached one of the Afghani women and said "This is marvelous. Can you tell the world what enabled women to achieve this amazing reversal of roles in such a short time?" The woman replied "Land mines."
