My thoughts...
If you'd rather sit in the first or sceond chair, try for it. Don't sit back and say 'whatever'. It's not about the prestige, it's about the challenge and what you'd learn sitting in first or second.
I know the Divertimento and give you kudos for taking the risk. I would have hoped the Director would have taken notice but he clearly didn't. Now for my advise... are you ready (for maybe the best advice that was ever given to me)?
Tell the Director what your goal is (a first chair), and ask him what steps you should take and what type of piece you should play. As he's telling you write it down.
This does several things... First, who better to tell you what the Director is looking for than the Director. Second, it lets the Director know that you want this postion. Third, (and this is the best) the Director wants to give good advice... everyone does. If you get the first chair the Director's advice was good... if you don't it was bad. The Director now has a vested interest in you getting the first chair.
My mentor gave me this advice and it's served my well for many years. Hope you're listening.
