What are you looking for?

Early cards were a little 'fuzzy' in the image department. Newer cards are better and have TIVO-like options. The basic ones anyway like pause real time shows, rewind real time shows. watch one record another (only some have this) and record shows while you are away. They don't have the subscription service and high end functions.

They cost in the area of $80 though places around here like Fry's (discount electronics) sell them for as low as $50.

If you have a good monitor with a DVD drive... I'd say it's the way to go.
