In 1930, Wallace Hume Carothers, one of the greatest minds of the 20th century, invented nylon, the first commercially produced synthetic polymer fiber. After a long struggle with depression, he commited suicide in 1937 by hanging himself with a nylon stocking.

Carothers, the inventor of nylon and synthetic rubber, suffered from depression and as a result, took his own life in 1937 by drinking cyanide.
A great loss.
