The hole in the bottom of a lock has two uses. It helps to drain water out of the lock, and the opening also allows access for lubricating the lock.

During the 1800s, the flat, wool hats known as berets were worn by the entire peasant class of France and the black beret continues to be the symbol of the peasant class in most of Europe today.
