NASA never commissioned Fisher to invent the pen, which he spent about $1 million developing and patenting, but NASA did test, approve, and use the Space Pen on the Apollo, Shuttle, and ISS space missions.
Today, most astronauts prefer to use felt tip markers! <

The hole in the top of a plastic pen cap exists solely to reduce air pressure, allowing the cap to fit tightly over the pen's tip, a feature first designed by the BIC company.
