I feel like I had an unfair advantage here considering my family is hindu and one of my closest friends is parsi

Oysters are still alive when you eat them raw, and a good thing too; if the oyster is dead, it's not worth eating.
Now that you've read these " pearls of wisdom, " go enjoy a fresh, live oyster. < no tanks
