Much like how our year is actually 365.25 days, so every 4th year we tuck in February 29th to make up for it, our days are actually 24h00m00.0008 seconds give or take a bit. Those 0.0008 seconds add up and every few years we need to add a second to the atomic clocks to account for it.

And yes, the leap second "this year" was actually added June 30th, 2015, which means the calendars fact is wrong (but so am I).

They're in the wrong year. June 30 2015 was a second longer, june30 2016 isn't ....
