Turtle ants inhabit the holes in trees made by tree-boring beetles. Turtle ant soldiers have flat head plates that are the same diameter as hole-entrances to their tree-nests.

When the nest i s threatened, soldier ants wedge their flat head plates into entrance holes, making it impossible for intruders to enter the nest.
