In the U.S., the main reason a largely disproportionate number of poor people live in the center of large cities is because suburban and rural areas offer little in the way of affordable housing for the poor.

Researchers have concluded that the poor choose to live in the middle of metropolitan areas due to the availability of public transportation.
Most U.S. suburbs and rural areas offer limited or no public transit.
