G8 Summit Kananaskis Country, Alberta Canada
Hey there everyone,
Just a quick question for folks living in the US and elsewhere. This week, the G8 Summit is being held in Kananaskis Country, here in Alberta Canada. For those of you unaware, the G8 is a meeting of several world leaders to discuss various global economic concerns, as well as discussing the allocation of global funds to developing nations.
The summit will bring with it many security challenges in light of recent world events, as well as the gathering of significant dignitaries in such a confined geographic location. Consequently, this summit is supposed to have great media coverage and recognition on an international basis.
What I'm curious about, is how many of you, locals aside, have heard about this particular summit, and read or seen anything about Kananaskis country/Calgary or the Summit in the news lately?
Thoughts, opinions comments appreciated.

How the G8 Works
The G8 is an informal group of eight countries: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. The European Union also participates and is represented by the President of the European Commission and by the leader of the country that holds the presidency of the European Council at the time of the G8 Summit. At Kananaskis, this leader is the President of the Government of the Kingdom of Spain.
The Chair of the G8 rotates on a calendar-year basis among the seven original members in the following order: France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Italy, and Canada. Although Russia and the European Union participate in discussions, they are not yet part of this rotation.

I read that they are going to keep the antiglobal crazies out of this one: Only way in is by helicoptor or one road and police are limiting road access to official delegates, their guests, and others officially connected to the proceedings. Kananaskis is a mountain village about an hour and a half from Calgary.
Prime Minister Cretien, the host, has structured the summit around three issues: fighting terrorism, strengthening the global economy, and expanding aid to Africa.
Bush needs to avoid any sort of disagreement about the war on terrorism. Everything else is secondary.

You know, I never understood the concept of "strengthening the global economy". I'm hardly an econ major, but in order to have a "strong" economy, one must have something to compare it to - a "weak" economy. So wouldn't that require another global economy to compare to?
Also, in any economy (whether global, national, local, whatever) there is limited resources, so there'll always be haves (i.e. the US, Japan, most of europe) and have nots (i.e. most of africa). Maybe I'm not "thinking globally" but there is only so much that can be done to help out the Africas of the world...
Bah, sorry for being so serious!
