Classified Report Points Out Flaws In Stryker Vehicles

March 31, 2005

By KOMO Staff & News Services

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Thousands of Fort Lewis soldiers depend on the Stryker vehicle to protect them in the war zone.

But now a classified Army report says those vehicles contain some potentially deadly design flaws.

The Washington Post says it's found a classified Army critique of the vehicles that admits it may be putting our soldiers at risk.

In the Army's Dec. 21 report compiled from different interviews with Stryker operators, it says there are life-threatening design flaws.

It says there are several problems with the armoring shield put around the vehicle to protect from rocket grenade launches, and the report says it causes tires to fail and impacts handling.

The report adds its defense system is flawed. One report says the grenade launcher can't hit targets when the vehicle is moving, and its laser, zoom, sensors, stabilizers, rotating speed don't work at night -- and the console display is in black and white making it hard to see.

The report goes on to say some crews took the launchers off of the vehicles because they posed more threat then protection.

The Strykers are also equipped with computers to help navigate and get critical information, but the report says they're too slow, freeze up, and overheat in the hot temperatures.

One report attributes the death of three soldiers on a seatbelt design flaw. It says the flaw contributed to the deaths in roll over accidents. It doesn't mention what specific soldiers were killed as a result, but three Fort Lewis soldiers were killed on Dec. 8, 2003 when a Stryker tumbled into an irrigation canal.

According to the latest report, 17 soldiers in the Stryker Brigade have died in 157 bomb explosions and 5 have died in rollover accidents.

There were some early criticisms of the vehicle. Some said it was too heavy to move so quickly, too big for urban combat, and the tires didn't work well off road.

According to the Washington Post, when the Army was asked about the latest reports, they said they didn't know about some of the things mentioned in the classified report. They said they are working to improve some of the flaws.

My local pump usually has cable news playing. At the current cost of fuel they should play first run movies.
