I think Mikey hit on it... it's a secular holiday. Sort of a neo-religions American holiday. One all faiths can celebrate. Very American.

The bay area is not as Christian as Indiana... this may have something to do with the experience here.

Any way you cut it, it's a bigger deal than the Cdn holiday of teh same name.
Good point Jed. I've lived in a lot of conservative areas with heavy Christian populations; also a lot of people who prioritize hunting and/or football above their families.
