The soil samples collected from each boring at depths of one foot bgs were analyzed by a state-certified analytical laboratory by EPA Method 314.0 for perchlorate; by full screen EPA Method 8260B for aromatic and chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including oxygenates, and for total petroleum hydrocarbons in the gasoline carbon chain range (TPH-G); by EPA Method 8270 for semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs); by EPA Method 6000/7000 for 16 toxic heavy metals, including arsenic; by EPA Method 7470A/7471A for total mercury; by EPA Method 8015 Modified for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) speciated by carbon chain range; and by EPA Method 8330 for explosive compounds. The soils samples collected from each boring at depths of three and five feet bgs were held by the laboratory, pending the results from the soil samples analyzed.

A total arsenic concentration of 19 parts per million (ppm) was detected in the Soil Sample F-1, collected from Boring F, located near the 15th green, which is located up in the foothills near the edge of the course. Concentrations of total arsenic detected in the soil samples collected from the other five borings ranged from 3.7 ppm to 5.2 ppm. No total concentration of any other toxic heavy metal, included mercury, was detected that approached the California Title 22 total threshold concentration limit (TTLC) or 10 times the Title 22 soluble threshold concentration limit (STLC). The rule of thumb is that if a total concentration detected is 10 times the soluble limit, a laboratory analysis for the soluble concentration for that metal will be performed.

No concentrations of perchlorate; any VOC, including oxygenates; TPH-G; any SVOC; TPH in any carbon chain range; or explosive compounds were detected.

Some of those old farts tried to give us a hard time as we drove this huge track-mounted Geoprobe direct push sampling device on the golf cart road. However, they did get the hell out of the way. Plus we had to dodge golf balls.

In accordance with the Preliminary Endangerment Assessment (PEA) Guidance Manual, residential land use will be considered for the SRE. Although past onsite land use has been exclusively commercial/industrial, potential future land use for the property includes a privately funded and operated elementary school. Although the DTSC school site cleanup guidance only applies to state funded school sites, the use of residential exposure parameters for the SRE will ensure an adequate level of health protectiveness for potential future school site users of the current building and property. Default exposure parameters provided by the DTSC that represent the Reasonable Maximum Exposure (RME) will be utilized in calculating health risks and hazards. Exposure pathways that will be screened and evaluated, as necessary (as shown in Figure 1), include incidental ingestion of soil, dermal contact with soils, inhalation of fugitive dust for non-volatile chemicals and, if volatile chemicals are present, inhalation of chemical vapors emanating into outdoor and indoor air. If aromatic and/or chlorinated hydrocarbon volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are detected in the onsite soil, an assessment of potential infiltration to indoor air will be conducted using the indoor air model developed by Johnson and Ettinger, as modified by Calofornia Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) Human and Ecological Risk Division (HERD) toxicologists to include California-modified toxicity factors and cancer slope factors (DTSC HERD 2001).

Incremental cancer risks will be calculated for both child and adult exposures. Chronic non-cancer effects will be calculated for a child exposure assuming an exposure duration of 6 years. The only exception will be the Johnson and Ettinger vapor intrusion model which is only designed to evaluate risks and hazards for adult indoor vapor exposures.Because the site is located in an urban setting, it is unlikely that potential exposures to ecological receptors will need to be evaluated. However, if exposure pathways pertinent to ecological receptors are identified, a screening ecological assessment will be conducted in accordance with the PEA Guidance Manual and in consultation with the DTSC.
