Interesting. My perception has been that NYC transit is expensive, but Toronto is at $3 and Vancouver is at $2.75...for one zone.

Also, I haven't bought anything today but I'm about to brave sale day at the grocery store.

Good point about the zones. $2.75 will allow you to ride the entire NYC Subway system. There are no zones.

My commutation costs

Train from home to Hoboken, NJ $273.00/month
PATH (subway) from Hoboken to NYC $84.00 for 40 rides
Metrocard, NYC transit card, $49.55 for 20 rides. I usually walk the 33 blocks in the mornings unless the weather is really bad

Aprroximate total cost of monthly commute $406.55. I live close enough to the train station that I can walk so I never drive.

In my last year of undergrad I lived really far from downtown but would walk to the closest major intersection so I'd only have to take one bus to the subway. It didn't save me any money but it helped keep me in shape.

For a while Seattle unlimited bus passes were, I think, $75/month. That was nice, except that you had to ride the bus.

I don't know what my commute costs are... pretty minimal, 4 miles each way in a 14 year old car.
