you guys can't spell realised

I've just found out why certain words are spelled differently by "Englishs" and "Americans"

 

Why?

 

I type with my feet.

 

There are lots of words that they can't spell, Ian, you just get used to it when you hang out here enough ....

 

Just heard it on NPR the other day.

Right after the independence war, there were alot of anti-British feelings. There was a movement to distance America from England. Of course, language was one of the strong point. People wanted their own language instead of using "English". Webster started to alter spelling so that words are different. For example "colour" vs "color" and "realize" vs. "relise", etc. People then realize how stupid this idea is and abandoned this later but those words stuck.

 

But they didn't bother changing the name of the language from English seems like a waste of time to me unless they actually started calling it "American" or something like that ....
