Charlie, we arrived the day after a cyclone had hit. We stayed for 3 days in Cairns, and then 4 days in Port Douglas which is about 50 miles north of Cairns. When we arrived in Cairns we were informed that there had been a large landslide and flooding and that of the only two roads to Port Douglas one was closed due to the landslide and the other closed due to flooding !!!!

Fortunately they were both reopened by the time we had to drive up there. We had quite a bit of rain while we were there, but fortunately, it always fell while we were either driving or in a restaurant

Having said that, I did manage to get a little burnt on the day we went out to the barrier reef . All in all, we were pretty lucky with the weather, because they were just at the end of the rainy season ....

We were a couple of thousand miles away from Peter, so no chance to meet up

Indeed, James.

Did you do any diving out at the great barrier reef? That's on my list of top 10 things to do before I die...

Only went snorkelling there Charlie .... I went diving there about 15 years ago ...... we didn't really have time to sort out a proper dive .... there are a number of safety concerns diving there at the moment .... the dive companies seem to have a habit of losing people on the reef !!

While we were there a Canadian tourist died on a dive .... they don't have the best safety record in the world ....

As an old SCUBA veteran, James, best you stuck to snorkeling, Youn don't want any trouble. Best SCUBA I've ever done was Palancar Reef off Cozumel. 600 foot vertical reef drop and the greatest profusiun of fish species and sheer numbners I've ever seen,

Gotta , go. Mrs. Raptor is calling me to dinner. BBQ halibut and artichoke with this special, spicy dipping sauce.

Interesting. I hadn't heard this about the reef.

George, Cozumel sounds great. Might have to try that sometime.
