Engineering -> Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical, Chemical, etc. Just in the Mechanical field there are numerous avenues to travel (design, test, IC engines, kinematics, NVH, etc etc). Aerospace kinda pins you into doing body work in the automotive field, at least for a while. Electrical will generally be working for suppliers, although the big 3 have integration engineers who deal with getting everything to work together. ChemEngs also generally end up with suppliers - tires, plastic interior/exterior parts, seating, etc.

If he is an artsy type of guy, there are avenues with the big 3 (primarily) for artistic body styling work - clay models, concept stencils/paintings/renderings, etc.

All the proceeding jobs are in the Midwest - mostly Southeast Michigan (Detroit/Ann Arbor), but also Michigan (outside the Detroit area), Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.

If he just wants to work on cars, the mechanic route is probably the way to go. The pay sucks at first, though, and he will probably have to work a lot of odd jobs to get into the good pay. But you do get to spend a LOT of time with cars.

You sell service.....Like tune ups, 60k services, Lube Oil Filter's, Transmission repairs, Brake replacement.....whatever a customer has a problem with their car you write it up....send it to the technician and communicate the problems or services recommended by the technician to the customer......usually base + commission + bonuses hence.....62.5k a year

Thermodynamics, thermodynamics, and a bit more thermodynamics for good measure. Also a some fluid dynamics (fluid flow) and probably some extra kinematics. Thermodynamics is probably one of the hardest subjects a mechanical engineer has to learn.
