If he is an artsy type of guy, there are avenues with the big 3 (primarily) for artistic body styling work - clay models, concept stencils/paintings/renderings, etc.
All the proceeding jobs are in the Midwest - mostly Southeast Michigan (Detroit/Ann Arbor), but also Michigan (outside the Detroit area), Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.
If he just wants to work on cars, the mechanic route is probably the way to go. The pay sucks at first, though, and he will probably have to work a lot of odd jobs to get into the good pay. But you do get to spend a LOT of time with cars.
