so the moon must be full as it casts a shadow on the moon which is seen by the earth.
SOlar Eclipse:
(Earth) (Moon) (Sun)
so the moon gets in the way of the sun. hence moon is new

I always look at the moon too, Mombud, and think it's way cool that we all see the same one, no matter where in the world we are. 
^This was it coming up in February.
