That has more to do with the moons revolving around the earth. As it moves around the earth that determines the phases.
If you go out close to sunset with a ball and move it across the elliptic (the path the moon moves across the sky... roughly the same as the path the sun and the stars take), you can see the phases on the ball. Move it over to the east and you'll see it as full... move it toward the west and it changes from full to gibbous (nearly full) then quarter then waning crescent.
If you do the same experiment in the morning you'll see moving from east to west the reverse. It changes from waxing crescent to second quarter then gibbous then full again.
