My FP tried arguing with me that Mars would be as big as the moon in the sky.

Nothing is happening on August 27. That was two years ago. Mars' apparent diameter is perhaps 1/25 of that of the moon.

Well nothing specifically no, but I said it would be bright and it will... already is. RIght now it's twice as bright as a mag 1 star.

I was addressing a hoax that is circulating. Billy's FP has apparently heard it and my son had as well. I know the brightest in tens of thousands of years ago was in '03 and that's apparently where the hoax date comes from.

We're approaching perihilic opposition (at 25,000 mph) which will occur on Oct 31st. We'll be only 43,000,000 miles away. That's not that far. Average distance is 140,000,000 miles. Compared to '03 though it's a lot further. '03 was just under 35,000,000 miles.

The hoax:

Yeah, Mars is bright. It looked good through my scope in Big bear.

I was pretty pleased that my son said, "BAH!" when he heard the hoax. He knew there was no way.
