I just got back from the Rec with some friends... I rode my Ellsworth there and on the way back, I was showing off a bit and got some major air off the stairs at the library.
I f*cked up the landing and, long story short: I snapped my right-side XTR crankarm! I mean honestly, how do you break an XTR crankarm?
Here's the 'before' pic:
And I'm still working on getting the 'after' pic - it's my friend's camera.
To be honest, XTR is a bad idea on a DH bike. The cranks especially are made super light by removing quite a bit of material and I've seen LOTS of them snapped by big drops. This is one of the cases where a set of LX or Deore cranks probably woulda survived...
I run LX on my mountain bike because it's light enough and hasn't broken yet. However, I would be quite happy with XT on my next bike.
XTR is the cutting edge stuff where they push the boundaries for lightness. The downside is that the tolerances that it is designed to in order to be light and super crisp shifting and such means that it tends to not like being heavily abused as much.
