What time of year are you thinking about, James...? April/May work great for a southern route, and August/September are great for a northern route.

I want to start in Boston, go down to New Orleans and across to LA and SF ......

Nah, best time for southern route is early spring! April/May. Not too hot, and no winter left down south.

Great viewing in the southwest (New Mexico, Arizona)... All good!

(of course, the view is always good in New Orleans! )

 

Spring, definitely spring. It will be nice in Boston, tolerable in New Orleans, and probably still chilly in Cali.

You need to find some LA-based s2k addict who wants to buy an S in Boston and you can offer to drive it to California for them!
