Mom, just load the picture in your gallery, and there's a button (looks like a torso/head of a person) called auto-av.

I just exported mine out of iphoto to my desktop and set the custom size as less than 100x100 pixels Then selected it with *choose file* for my avatar. Went right in.

Seriously... Before I paid my membership I couldn't get in to my photo album. Now I can but two things: When I click on "Avatar" (while looking at a pic) it just resizes my kid-on-bike av to be 100 high and very wide. AND when I click on a pic in a thread it tells me I don't have permission.

I think my permissions aren't 100%.
