In the mid-60's, representatives of the Reedy Creek Development group started buying land from locals for well below market price. Threats, veiled and not-so, were made to landowners, and different corporation names used so that no one realized it was all the same company they were selling to. Of course, Reedy Creek is now it's own city-state, with complete autonomy from the laws of the state of Florida.
Did you know not only do they have their own police force, but that crimes committed on Disney grounds are often NOT reported to state or local p.d.? Also, due to the legislation they were able to wrangle, they can build their own nuclear power plant and their own airport, without any oversight from the state government?

From that very article, this:
Disney owns 27,000 acres in southwest Orange and northwest Osceola counties, most of it purchased in the 1960s when Walt Disney stealthily assembled his holdings before the public learned of his plans to build Disney World.
As a native to those lands, you can imagine just how much my family loves Walt. ratbastard
