Default My whole day is ruined

I got a call from our secretary at about 8:45 am this morning. I was still sleeping. She woke me up, and told me that one of our servers was making this high pitched beeping noise. I was thinking that it can't be good, so I jumped out of bed, put clothes on (didn't shower) and drove the S2000 to work.

I get off the freeway, and a quarter mile after the ramp two lanes merge into one. I'm at about 25 mph in 2nd gear and there is an SUV in the right lane, so I punch it to get in front of it before I merge. I wasn't paying attention to the rpms and bounced off the rev-limitor about 2 or 3 times.

After I got to the office, I get out of my car and start walking to the building. On the passanger side just behind the door I notice this small nick in the paint. It was not there before, and I can tell you that for sure because I'm very anal about my car. So I get my microfiber cloth out of the car, and start to see if I can get it out. Nope. As I was scrubbing I start to see small scratches develop in the paint. So I just stopped.

So I walk up to my office from the parking lot and I pull the culprit out of the rack, and as I do that, the power chord gets caught in something and gets unplugged. Great. And that was one of our crucial servers. So I plug it back in, and pull the top cover off. I try to find where the noise is coming from, and as soon as I touch the hot swap bay, the noise goes away. Well that's good.

And that's where we are right now. The thing I'm most worried about is the paint damage on the S2000. When I get home I will try to claybar that one spot, hoping that the blemish will come out.

Yeah, y'know that's exactly what I was thinking.

1. Bouncing off the rev-limiter is no harm, BTW. That's what it's there for.

2. Too bad about killing the production server, but I hope it rebooted for you quickly and there wasn't too much outage. Consider fault-tolerance or clustering in the future.

3. Never scrub the paint on your car. Try bug/tar or a very gentle simoniz-type abrasive. Baby oil is also very good for getting grime off. If you did do some scratching, first go ahead and use some touch-up paint on the chip, and then you might want to consider some porter cable action to get the scratches out.

Best of luck. I'm home today with a headache on the most wonderful day of the year out here. Now, IMO, that's bad luck.

Thanks, George. And, I have no excuse; I can't claim any exposure to nasty VOCs or anything!!

A small paint blemish? Dude, I can appreciate someone taking good care of the car's exterior, but dayum, that's not enough to ruin your day! Flip your tire trailer over, have it poke a hole in your fender - that'll dampen your day. Or have some idiot rear-end you so you can't drive your S for months. Or even worse, have some dumbass crack-smoker flip their cavalier over a wall and crease your hood!
