This is a repost, too long for the
but maybe the n00b will enjoy. So here goes nuthin'
I am aged, infirm, and myopic. Obstinate, argumentative, and obstreperous. Ex's refer to me as a self-centered, egotistical a$$, or at least until they receive their child support checks.
Speaking of, Tyler, age 11, and Madelyn, age 8, live a beautiful life in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Megan, age 5, lives in Illinois, but she gets a monthly respite when I take her to see the other two and we play like fish in the hotel swimming pool for the weekend.
I was conceived at a racetrack. Specifically, the Sebastian Inlet Holiday Inn. Thankfully, my Grandmother talked some sense into my dad and I wasn't named Sebastian. My Grandfather imported and raced TVR's from 1961 until 1972, along with some other nifty rides. In 1966 (one of my first memories) he raced the ex-Pedro Rodriguez Ferrari 250GTO at the very first Daytona 24hr. I have pictures of that car sitting in our front yard on an open trailer, behind a hemi-powered Chrysler stationwagon full of race tires.
We had a TVR Griffith series 400, with a Holman-Moody prepped engine. My Mom used to make me hide in the passenger footwell when she'd drag-race the local college boys. My Dad augered that one into a ditch New Year's Eve, 1968.
My Mom promised me that if I didn't own a motorcycle before I was 18, she'd buy me a race car. And she did. Though I started my autocross career in a 4-door Ford Grenada, it wasn't long before I was roadracing and autocrossing my Elden PH10. Which, I believe, is still being actively raced in vintage FF.
College? I majored in beer. However, while president of the UofF Sports Car Club, I had the pleasure of meeting Fast Phil Currin (google that one - a great guy, who did it all out of his own pocket). I worked with him on some of the Trans-Am 'vettes, and also worked on many other IMSA series cars. After a summer of living in LA, driving all over the US, eating weeks-old tuna, I got a real job in Dallas.
Dallas? Kim Campbell hired me on to crew his ARS (IndyLights) car. A month after moving there, the Sheriff padlocked the door to the garage. On to Detroit, where I was the lead mechanic at Roush Racing on all customer cars, and 2nd mechanic on both Bruce Jenner and Scott Pruett's cars. Then came Connecticut, as Paul Newman's crew chief, Chicago running (and driving) Formula Atlantics, B'ham, Alabama running the Southwind-prepped IMSA GTU Dodge Daytonas and LUK Clutch series Eagle Talons until Chrysler pulled all their budget to go play in the NASCAR arena.
Off to Wisconsin, where I was the Sr. Engineer at Buell Motorcycle. Started off as employee #14, in Erik Buell's barn. 6 years later, we had over 200 employees and were shipping over 40 bikes/day. Proudest moment? The day the first M2 Cyclone rolled out the door. I managed to get that program from start to production in only 10 months, a feat no other manufacturer has ever duplicated.
Had enough?
