Mom-

(1) Thrust vectoring=variable pitch turbine exhaust nozzles. Can turn on a dime.

(2) Actually, dad sent mom home to LA from Keesler AFB (Buloxi, Miss.) at the absolute last minute so The Raptor wouldn't have Mississippi on his birth certificate. True story.

That's it, Wicky. My car was named after that bird and I was named after my car.

I saw it's public flying debut at the Edwards AFB air show I always thought the FA18 Hornet was a very maneuverable bird, but the F22 made its FA18 chase plane look like a beer truck. The following year at the air show it was static display only. I asked a crew member and he said "The only reason you got to see it fly last year was because it was tied to a training mission. It doesn't have its full avionics poackage yet and is still tethered to a crew in the tower. For us to send it up would cost $70,000 in fuel consumption. (Sounded like bullshit to me.)

political smokescreen........

it does seem to be quite the amazing machine. But I question it's purpose. It can outfly anything anywhere in the world, but our air power roll seems to be quite different now than twenty years ago.....
