Origin of the word SHIT
In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything had to be transported by ship and it was before the invention of commercial fertilizer, so large shipments of manure were common. It was shipped dry because it weighed less than wet, but once seawater hit it, the process of fermentation began, a byproduct of which is methane gas. As the stuff was stored below deck in bundles, methane began to build up and, the first time someone came below with a lantern, BOOOOOOM! Several ships were destroyed before bundles of manure were stowed high enough off the lower decks so that water would not make contact. The bundles of manure were stamped Ship High in Transit (SHIT).
