I saw a headline that said a groundhog passed away the day before Groundhog Day. Not sure where it was though

It was Milltown Mel, in New Jersey, he died just before the date. I recall the one in Ontario (Wiarton Willie) actually died the day of the event, he was DOA when he was expected to come out of the cave.
