Right now if I have the extra time for shopping when using priceline or expedia or travelocity etc for airline/hotel/rental car I see what the best price they quote is, and then I call up and try to get the same price from the original supplier, i.e. TWA, Hilton, Hertz. Usually works, and it make it MUCH easier to resolve any subsequent problem.

right now, the reason Mike pointed out. I reserved a room at a hotel titled "Travelodge Portland E Gresham" thinking I was getting a hotel in portland, OR on e gresham (one of the streets downtown). After booking it, I looked up the address and it turns out the hotel is in troutdale, OR...about 15 miles in the wrong direction. Really a stupid mistake on my part. So I called expedia today to see what they could do. There's a travelodge that's actually downtown, and shows availability for the date and type of room I want, but expedia said they were booked. So I asked what the next best thing they could do was. Which turned out to be about 7.5 miles from the track (vs a little under 4 for the downtown travelodge) and cost $30 a night more...and their cancellation fee is $25.

...so I'm gonna end up eating the $25, booking directly through travelodge and never doing business with expedia again.
