like ZGirl I'm confused

Why are there flotation devices under plane seats instead of parachutes?
I'm thinking this could be a bad time to ask if anyone knows of a major plane crash over water in the last 15 years where the flotation devices actually saved people...?

Obviously I'm asking anyway...

I'm only going from hearsay information, but I heard that no commercail plane has ever succesfully made an emergency landing on water, which I guess would be the only time that the life jackets would be of any use.

Having said that, a couple of planes slid off the end of the runway at the old Kai Tak airport in Hong Kong, ending up in the harbour. I guess people on those planes used the life jackets when they got out ....

I'm wondering if this is why they now do the safety announcement on many flights with a cartoon rather than a living person...

I'm thinking about a story I heard from one of the domestic airlines in China. When they had a safety inspection on one of their planes there were no life jackets. The plane was grounded until they provided life jackets, but the comment from the airline was that the route this plane served never went within 1000 miles of water so what was the point in them having life jackets on the plane?!?!

I'm saying that I've often wondered about that myself. What exactly is a floatation device going to do for me if we crash in the desert?

I'm thinking that you could make a pretty good sun shelter out of a number of flotation devices connected together ....

I'm saying that when I travel with people that are uncomfortable on planes that I have been known to point out rivits on the wings and ask if they look loose...

Tends to quiet people down pretty quick...

I'm thinking it's easier for the rescue crew to find passengers if they are wearing bright yellow jackets. Unfortunately this doesn't necessarily guarantee the survival of the passengers.
