I'm THRILLED to report that it looks like my baby is working better than new now! 
Turns out it was the slave cylinder. It wasn't leaking (yet), but I think the only thing keeping the fluid from leaking was all the gunk (thick chunks of greasy stuff...not sure what) that were clogging it up, because the entire seal had torn wide open.
The master cylinder appears to be fine. I asked him if we should replace it and he said he wouldn't. He ALSO said that if it DOES fail in the relatively near future (next few months) that he'll replace it for just the cost of the part...no labor.
