I'm thinking you need to learn how to drive. I've gotten almost 350 miles on a tank and regularly get 300 during highway drives. 29-31 MPG is doable top-down averaging 80+ MPH.

I tend to downshift..... a lot...... and stay in VTEC.... a lot
