I'm noting that pay is generally proportionate to responsibility... not the amount of work one does.

Also, I'm willing to bet that your company's higher ups don't go out of their way to remind you that they don't want you working for them unless you're a contractor. I'm also willing to bet that if you work for them for 4 1/2 years, you'll get more than a 2% raise (measured against inflation, I've actually lost about 5% of my salary in 4 1/2 years).
