I've never figured out the prevailing winds there. The current wind is WNW, which would be a somewhat logical prevailing wind (I'd actually assume a WSW prevailing, which would blow the steam the left but towards the camera). The "normal" wind during the summer seems to have been an east wind - the only thing I can think of is it has a Santa Anna type wind in the summer, blowing west from the desert towards the much cooler coast.

The steam usually blows from left to right (southward)... today it's blowing from right to left (Northward)
