Yet our 17 year old sales assistant can NOT count change in his head.

My freshman year in HS, there were only a handful of us with graphing calculators (TI-85s and TI-82s, mostly). By my senior year, they were mandatory for incoming freshman, and half the kids had TI-92s. 4 years of college and 4 years of engineering and there are still functions of the TI-85 that I've never touched, but hey, if the kid has a TI-92 they can pass the math tests!

Don't you have any 3rd grade math books?

I took him off any interaction with people. He is now back room slacker! Not my job to teach him basic math!
What drives me nuts is when the bill is $6.60 and I give the clerk a 10, 2 1's and a dime. Then they look at you like your from space.
I don't want all those goddam singles! At least now with newer cash registers I can just say "punch it in!"

Reminds me of a Dilbert I saw once. Same scenario as above and the clerk looks at him confused and says, "why did you do that?". He says, "I'm an engineer and I feel it's my job so simplify peoples life."

He does seem to be able to learn..... just not too quickly
Most likely...
