Mr. Anderson is thinking that Keith could in fact drink more, but with the caveat that the "functional" part of, "functional alcoholic" might be in jeopardy thereafter.

Keith agrees. Keith loves his booze too much for it to overtake his life. If he becomes a full blown alcoholic then he has to give it up forever....and thats just unacceptable.
